Lately I’ve been living a dream that came true. I commute to work by boat. Yesterday was the ultimate, as I managed to row to work and then sail home. It’s great to be excited about going to work, even it’s just about the commute! on the way in and on the way home

Tinef, my Chester Yawl that sails, is now a left-coaster, but she grew up in the East and had a good life while we were back there. She was built in my garage in Princeton, launched on Carnegie Lake, and then towed behind my truck to a couple cool sailing spots before making the trek [...]

On Saturday my cousin had an awesome birthday party on Greenlake. The day doubled as an opportunity to get my boat in the water (for the first time on the West Coast). The weather was amazing and perfect for some rowing and sailing. A few extra friends even showed up just to do some “floating”.

Little did I know, this would be the last time my boat would see East coast waters. This “short film” is a conglomeration of footage I shot while exploring part of the Maine Island Trail. In this trip, Mic and I sailed all the way around Vinalhaven in Penobscot Bay (trip report here). The video [...]

Mic and I were blessed with agreeable weather last week, allowing for a successful passage around the Fox Islands in Penobscot Bay, Maine.  We made use of the Maine Island Trail for a few nights of camping along the way as we circumnavigated Vinalhaven.  The trip was mostly uneventful although the crossing back to the [...]

FYI, Here’s what I’m thinking: This should be about a four day trip to get all the way around Vinalhaven in Penobscot Bay. Looks like good conditions for a crossing tomorrow: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.104351509943406&lon=-68.994140625&site=gyx&unit=0&lg=en&FcstType=marine I’ll be sailing out of Rockland. Should conditions allow it, the plan is to sail around the North end of Vinalhaven (North Haven) to [...]

Solar Kit Installed

It took converting my campsite into a workshop for the weekend, but finally, this Chester Yawl got a solar panel and electrical system. The primary motivation for installing electrical is to support a small bilge pump for keeping water out of the boat.

Scheming

I’ve been telling people about this crazy adventure I’m planning up in Quebec. It would be the gnarliest thing I’ve taken on if it manifests. It’s still questionable whether I can take the time, or even prepare for such a challenge… but I’m thinking about it.

Maine

It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite places in the world. Granted, I haven’t spent a winter here, but the summers are just awesome. While New Jersey is hot and humid and sticky and just plain nasty (in my opinion)… Maine is lovely. One of the best things to me is the boating culture here. [...]
